Subject: CP from home centers

A word of caution on purchasing CP from home center superstores: you
cannot rely on the genus and species as they have labeled them. Last year
I purchased what is clearly a Nepenthes from one of these stores. The
problem is that it was labeled as S. purpurea. This year I saw the same
plant labeled as N. madagascarensis but I am not convinced that they have
it accurate yet. My Nepenthes does not resemble pictures that are posted
on the web. On the bright side, what ever species it is, it has been very
easy to grow and I have been able to propogate it easily by splitting it.
I grew one plant in an east facing window with no artificial light and
another on a 14 hr. light cycle with fluorescent lights (approximately 45
cm away). Even in the reduced light cycle of Cincinnati, Ohio winter the
one in natural light thrived and even grew better than the one on the 14 hr
artificial light cycle. Now if I can just get someone to help identify if
this is a known species or a hybrid...

Kind Regards,

Ken Skau
