Ken and list,
I agree that more often than would be desired, the plants are labeled
incorrectly. For the general public, it probably doesn't really matter, since
little Johnny or Susie probably just wants one of these "cool" plants.
Usually, they end up with a VFT, which just about everyone can reconize
anyway. And more often than not, they're gonna give it some hamburger and
kill it, anyway (sigh). For anyone with even half a brain-cell of knowlwdge
about CP (and I'm at the bottom of that list), major mistakes such as you
mentioned (calling a Nep a S. purpurea!!) should not even enter into the
picture.
As far as species within a genus, true, you can't always rely on the labeling.
I have learned to look at the actual plant, and disregard the label attached
to the container. Personally I am not into CP for the precise collection of
species. I just enjoy these things!!! Is the Nepenthes I purchased REALLY a
madagascarensis? Personally I'm not really too concerned. It is a Nepenthes,
and it has 'cute' little pitchers, and all the plants seem to be going well.
Ditto for the ones that were just labeled "Nepenthes hybrid". They are
definitely NOT the same as the others. Good enough for me. And besides, at
$3.00 a pop....you can't go wrong.
Good growing to all,
