While searching for insects to feed my fly trap, I decided on a crane fly
(Tipula species). After a few days of being in the trap, the trap developed
a black rot beginning at the insects head or thorax area and spreading
through the trap, but not progressing down the petiole. I believe that
Tipula species are carriers of a disease of grasses. Maybe this is infecting
my VFT?
I placed another crane fly in and recieved the same effect. Other insects
(sowbugs - which it loves-very juicy!, soldier beetles, houseflies, etc.) do
not have the same effect in my growing conditions. Has anyone else noticed
this on their traps?
