Dear Nick and Dave,
I have killed my share of P.primuliflora plants in the past,
though I have had one of my plants for about 4 years now. I
now keep these plants in a propagator so relatively warm and
humid conditions are maintained all year round. When I have
lost this plant in the past they were kept in a water tray
in one of my greenhouses where both temperature and humidity
changes would be greater than the propagator. I think this
species may be intolerant to such environmental changes.
Regarding pollination, this seems to depend on the
particular plant you have. I have two 'clones', the one I
have had the longest sets seed no problem at all by self
pollination with a water colour brush. The second clone was
bought by Ron Mudd from a garden centre in the UK and is
probably Dutch in origin. Its a beauty and becomes covered
in flowers, it ended up in my hands when Ron moved to
Taiwan. Despite all the flowers it will not self no matter
how many times I try. It will set seed however if I cross it
with pollen from the first clone.
On a further point on pollination, bear in mind Madeleine's
posting on the UKCPS donation to AtlantaBG. Much of that
money was raised selling seed. So get pollinating,
harvesting and send it on to the various society seed banks.
This way we can all contribute to such projects.
Regards
Loyd
