Howdy folks, Peter here at California Carnivores. It's 106 here today, or
thereabouts. So hot we lost one employee.
I have a message for Susan at the The Botanical Gardens in the Show Me
State.
Trent Meeks has one of those missing Nepenthes we thought might have been lost
to cultivation. I think he has 'Henry Shaw' or 'Lt. Pring' . (Trent: thanks
for your message very much). I mention these "lost" Nepenthes clones in The
Savage Garden under lowland hybrids.
Speaking of Missouri, I will be interviewed live on a radio station in
that state on Wednesday morning, at 9:30 am Central Time, next week on the
22nd. It's a garden program, but unfortunately I left the host's name and the
call letters of the show at home. I'll try to post more info tomorrow.
Also, the week after next, The Discovery Channel is filming here for a
new program called Next Exit. It's a science oriented show about two teens who
visit strange and unusual places in the U.S. or maybe the world. I believe it
premiers in the Fall.
That same week, Home and Garden Network will be filming a half hour
special also at the nursery. I'll let you know when and if it appears.
Next week I'll be interviewed by Dick Tracy (yes!) of the Sacramento Bee
newspaper. I'll also let ya'll know when it is in the paper.
On newstands now, The Savage Garden is the cover story in the
publication of the California Academy of Sciences magazine called California
Wild. (As promised, Barry, I'll send you a copy.) The cover photo appears in
the book and looks pretty fantastic: N. spectabilis, N. glabrata, and
ventricosa. I wrote the text concerning the controversy of what is/is not
carnivorous in the plant world. The photos are by Jonathan Chester, and some
of them did not appear in the book, or are different versions of photos that
did.
This may be another "Martha Stewart" story, but (gulp) Donnie and Marie
Osmond's producer called us and my publisher to have us appear on their new
television show this Fall. Their new show competes with Rosie O'Donnell's
(sp?) show, a talk/entertainment program like the old Merv Griffin show.
Th-th-th-th-that's all folks! Back to watering! The humidity's about
30%! Peter
