By your description it does sound like you are keeping the plants too
wet. I never stand mine in water and once mature I tend to keep them
just damp. The top of the soil mixture usually looks dryish. By doing
this I have had plants growing for almost five years now. They do go
dormant in late Fall and then start sprouting up in Spring but this
time, just before they return, is the most crucial time for them.
