Subject: Sarracenia Minor Seed

Dear All,
I've just checked the seed pods of my greenhouse Sarracenia today.
Most are ok and are growing well, despite our dreadful Summer
(no shortage of rainwater here. Any southern US residents want to send us some
of your sunshine to balance it up?).

The problem I've got is with Sarracenia minor.
When it does bother to flower (first time for two years), despite my self
pollinating it, it still doesn't form a full seed pod. There is one there, but
I know when I break it open at year end, I'll find a lot of small grains that
are presumably the embryos that didn't form.

Is there something I should be doing?
Is the plant 'resistant' to self pollination?
How does the plant reproduce in the wild?
Has anyone else had consistant failure/successes with this plant?

It is also one of the last to flower. Could this be the cause ?(not enough
time during the summer to form seed).

I know that the pollen is viable because I used it a couple of years ago to
cross with a S.Leucophylla (S. X Excellens ?) and the plants are unmistakable
(nice plants as well !!)

Any advice would be much appreciated.
