Steve, Which CP's do you have next to your orchids? I have
Paphiopedilums, Phalaenopsis, and Cattleyas growing in the same lathe
house with my Nepenthes. The scale go for the Neps before the orchids.
I mix one teaspoon per gallon of R.O. water of powdered Orthene or two
teaspoons per gallon of 10% powdered malathion to control these tough
little buggers. Do not mix the two insecticides or spray consecutively
without at least ten days between treatments. Orthene is systemic. but
malathion seems to work quicker. Be careful with either pesticide, as I
suspect leaf crippling in Nepenthes caused by too strong a dose. Also
take proper precautions when handling either of these pesticides, as
they are equally effective at eradicating CP Growers. With the
malathion, add a couple of drops of liquid soap as a wetting agent. For
scale, repeat treatment every 10-12 days until they are gone.
