P.macrophylla produces large spade shaped leaves during the summer though produces a buried winter rosette reminiscent of a bulb. As with P.acuminata care needs to be taken during Winter to keep the 'bulb' reasonably dry without allowing the plant to dessicate. P.macrophylla only flowers from the summer rosette, the flowers are dark purple and distinctive in having rounded edges to the petals.
