Subject: D.capensis problems and Sarr pitchers

Hi everyone,

I accidentally deleted the last digest, so I'm going from memory here!
To the person who's Sarr is producing 'flat' pitchers; these sound like
phyllodia. Did you provide them with a dormancy period this winter? If
not, they may be trying to enter dormancy now. Keep them cool and with
reduced photoperiod for a few months (or at least weeks at this point)
and they _may_ survive.

Tom, I have D.capensis growing that are almost 7 years old, and
I've heard of stories of people having them for decades. The only
thing I do with mine is chop off the tops every fall as the plant
starts to produce a stalk, and usually by that time the leaves are
looking very ratty. It always comes back without fail, and currently
has about four growing points (or maybe more, I'm not sure).

The deformed, blackened leaves happen with my plants sometimes too.
I generally don't worry about it, as it'll usually correct itself. Just
remove the dead leaves to prevent fungus. If it persists, pull it out
and check to make sure the roots are in good condition (they should be
firm and brown to black in colour, only the very tips will appear
white).

Happy growing,

Chris
