Hawk,
I don't disagree that Big Lagoon is a sensitive area and should be
visited with care. I might disagree that it is a bad choice for the
field trip for several reasons. It is directly on the route between San
Francisco and Gasquet and, being a 2-minute sidetrip from US 101, makes
for a nice break during a long drive. Also, the bog is adjacent to a
paved road and a popular picnic and boat launching area and is not
obscure. I have visited the area since 1970 and although in some areas
there is evidence of localized trampling, most of the 20-acre (or so)
area is intact. I was there last weekend and access is not a problem.
Finally, there numerous interesting questions about Big Lagoon bog. It
is within rock-throwing distance from the ocean. How was the bog formed?
How old is it? Was it created or greatly affected by the great
earthquake and tsunami of 1700? What would logging the adjacent spruce
forest do to siltation rates? There is a huge, partially constructed
casino on adjacent land -- will this affect the bog?
