Hi All,
I have another bog question. Maybe I wasn't paying close attention but I
don't remember seeing a discussion if most of the small cp bogs were set into
the ground or were raised above the ground. If the bog is above ground how
does freezing affect the plants? I tried to overwinter a S. alata hybrid
(full mix unknown) in an above ground small bog (about 20 gallon tub) and the
plant didin't make it overwinter. It was sheltered from the direct wind and
desiccation. It was placed outside in July and allowed to harden off until
true cold weather set in, but it didn't make it. Neither did a couple of
flytraps. I would prefer to not repeat this process again. I'm prepared to
build a window box to overwinter off my yearling S. leucophylla and S. p.
purpurea if there is a good chance of this happening again. A plexi window
box would allow a more controlled cooling down period (I think). The box
would be out of direct sun but would receive a large amount of bright
indirect light. As I'm in an apartment I can't put in a decent sized inground
cp bog (like a half whiskey barrel). Any suggestions and comments?
Ed
