Dear John Green,

I make sure that the resting bud is in good contact with the soil. My
D. intermedia grow on stems up to five inches tall. The winter resting buds
form at the top of these stems and they must be pushed back down to ground
level or they will dry out. Only the buds are alive, the rest of the plant
has withdrawn into the bud and it should be treated similar to a bulb,
expect instead of burying them completely, just bury the bottom half.
Alternately you could just place the buds on/in a Sphagnum hummock and the
moss could help protect them from drying (just make sure the moss doesn't
dry).
