David Wong asked me to post a message to tell you that he was
wiped out in a break-in on friday October 15. Someone came by at 3:30am
and cleaned out all his nepenthes except for a few alatas. The noise woke
up his wife and she saw someone carrying the plants away. Her description
a local fellow by the name of Dan MacDonald.
Dan isn't very experienced in growing but has increased his collection
quickly. He has visited David before so he knew the plants that David was
growing. He was also aware of the plants that Lorne was growing because
of the first newsletter that mentioned Lorne's collection.
A few of the guys who live out Dan's way went to visit him saturday
on the premise of just wanting to see his collection. He wouldn't let them
into the house and physically threatened them if they didn't leave the
yard. There's little doubt that Dan was the one who did it, but proving it
is another matter. The police who were investigating Lorne's break-in have
been notified and will hopefully pay Dan a visit. However, he may be so
scared from saturday's visit that he might dump the palnts and they'll be
lost.
He has the last newsletter with everyones address so if anyone your
way gets a call about trading ask him what for a plant list and we'll see
if any of David's or Lorne's plants are on his list.
David's pretty upset about losing his plants and has called just about
everyone including Tom. Hopefully the police will come up with something.
On other news, I don't know how literate you are on internet now or whether
Bob Beers has helped you but a few messages you may want to send to
listserv@opus.hpl.hp.com are:
recipients cp (gives you an address list of all the subscribers)
index cp (tells you all the files available)
get cp "filename" (will download the file "filename")
You might want to download the archives for May, June, July. there are a
couple of messages about group orders being put into a couple of tissue
culture people in Germany. They have some interesting plants like rajah &
lowii. You might also want to get the sellerslist - I'm thinking of sending
an order into Alan Lowrie and getting some seeds like Byblis gigantea and
some sundew tubers like Drosera gigantea.
I've also had a raccoon attack that wiped out my 1 Drosophyllum and all my
Byblis liniflora. I've finally moved all my more tender plants inside so
they'll be safe. The raccoon doesn't seem to mess with Sarracenia. Were
putting our house up for sale and moving across the inlet at the base of the
mountains so we'll probably always have raccoons but I'll hopefully have a
greenhouse next spring.
