dormancy

Hi all,

Just some news from a windowsill grower in California:

My D. filiformis filiformis plants are dormant now - grown on an East
windowsill. The cottony puffs are an interesting method of dealing with
the cold. It must be for protection from drying winds.

Interesting observation: An established D. binata that was given to me
went dormant a couple months ago - even though I had it indoors (it is
now outside). I was given a D. binata seedling in July which is still
growing. It is indoors next to a window that gets cold at night. Perhaps
it hasn't established the dormancy cycle yet since this is its first
winter. Granted, the night temps here in the Bay Area haven't gotten
very low yet. Perhaps there is a similarity to Sarracenia seedlings not
needing a dormancy - as Barry had mentioned?

The VFTs are finally growing winter leaves. I know, its past due; but I
am growing mostly indoors. Some people at the last cp society meeting
thought my VFTs were humorous in their tardiness - I brought some with
me. I do, however, have a VFT outdoors that is not growing winter
foliage yet. It's next to a strawberry plant that is now blooming
profusely! Must be a local warm spot.

Gary
