Of course "reverse osmosis" is the opposite of "osmosis" :)
where real pressures are generated by concentration differences.
For example, lots of biochemists disrupt bacterial walls and
membranes by popping the little guys into distilled water...they
explode.

RO seems to beat out distillation on the big scale. The municipal
sea-water conversion plant that Santa Barbara installed
is RO based for example. Big membranes!
