The perlite keeps the mix open and improves drainage. However (and for
what its worth) the few _Dionea_ that I've seen in the wild grow in a
mixture of peat and fine sand. The sand is much finer than any perlite or
vermiculite I've seen and derives from older coastal shoreline previously
in the area. My default mix is 2 parts peat moss, 1 part vermiculite, and
1part perlite. I save the sphagnum for special cases since its fairly
expensive.
