Azolla is a little different in being a fern with "irregularly divided
sessile fronds with crinkled appearance", whereas the _Lemnaceae_ have
only one-few small leaves per plant and are flowering plants. They all
float on the surface of the water and form a carpet of leaves (so can be
a pest in ponds...).
"Flora of Melbourne" lists two species (found in the Melbourne area):
_A.filiculoides_ "Red or Pacific Azolla" from Aust., NZ, N.Am & S.Am
_A.pinnata_ "Ferny Azolla" from Aust. (except Tasmania), PNG, Asia & Africa
