N. gracilis seems to like conditions alittle wetter than your
average Nep's. Mine don't really pitcher good unless they are
rooted into living sphagnum moss (tends to hold water).

Shock from the journey (or just plain old shock) can sort of
'age' the plants. Browning of the stem is normal to the growth
of Nep's, BUT if you're think the plant is sick or damaged, take
a cutting of it. If the plant is alright it will grow anyway. It
can't hurt to have a back up.
