I am wondering whether anyone has any experience/advice/
suggested specied or hybrids on growing Nepenthes outside
in the Los Angeles area. I live in Pasadena (about 2 miles
west of the Huntington Botanical Garden), in USDA zone 10
(Sunset zone 21). Our high temperatures throughout the year
are typically in the 60s-90s, with lows in the low 40s-low 60s.
Our humidity is often low in the afternoons, particulary when
it is hot, and often high in the night/morning, with fog not
uncommon. Frosts are infrequent (I'm not sure that we ever hit
freezing last winter) and light, giving way to much warmer days.
Winters are rainy, summers dry.
Anyway, beyond advice, if anyone would be willing to send me
any seedlings/cuttings or seeds to experiment with, I would be
more than willing to send a variety of cuttings of the many
succulents/epiphytic cacti/bromeliads that I am growing.
Since I am new to this list, I should introduce myself. I am
a postdoc in the division of biology at the California Institute
of Technology. My research interests are protein crystallography/
biochemistry. My education was at Yale (graduate school) and
Rice (undergrad). I am a native of Sunnyvale, CA.
I am new to CP's. I currently have an N. alata (doing well after
3 weeks outside!) and a Sarracenia hybrid in the lab (although I
have killed Venus flytraps and Darlingtonias over the years).
Thanks!
