Sorry that I'm not going to answer your question. I will give
a "tangential reply". New Zealand sphagnum (dried) from OFE Int'l.
in Florida will start growing again if placed in the correct
conditions: lots of water, lots of light, and warm temperatures.
I guess that there are viable spores in the dried sphagnum which
start growing after a while.
I don't know where you can buy live sphagnum, sorry.
