Comment:
The authors thought they should describe some Spanish populations of
_Pinguicula at specific rank. One of which (viz. "P.submediterranea") is
identical (basionym cited as synonym in protologue!) with _P.longifolia
subsp.dertosensis_ (Canigueral) mihi. Nothing unusual (despite the
interesting chromosome count of 2n=48; _P.l.reichenbachiana_ and _P.l.l._
have 2n=32) is reported in the paper.
However, the other one (_P.mundi_) does merit more consideration. This one
is apparently a local endemic known only from the type location. It is
morphologically and also geographically intermediate between _P.longifolia_
and _P.vallisneriifolia_. As long as _P.v._ is considered distinct at
specific rank from _P.l._, it (_P.mundi_) could really be considered a
third "transitional" species. It shares 2n=48 with _P.l.d._.
Most unfortunately, the authors did not examine the population from Hoz de
Beteta (supposedly belonging to _P.l.d._). RAPD studies performed with 6
clones of 4 species (_P.longifolia subsp.longifolia_ is missing, however!)
seem to justify the distinction of the taxa mentioned (at appropriate
ranks, however). _P.mundi_ seems to be closer to _P.l.d._ than to _P.v._.
The literature, synonyms, and specimens studied and cited are incomplete,
so future confusion is likely.
Kind regards
