Once I picked a perfectly good 3 1/2" VFT rhizome off the top of a compost
pile in spring. The people who threw it away said that it "died" on their
coffee table over winter. Although it was black and soggy at one end, it
had four new growing points coming out along the sides, with the main crown
buried beneath some brown leaves and perfectly healthy. Go figure.
