Hi Chris,
There are a number of people doing research directly on the plants
themselves as well as the organisms associated with them. I'll have to
look up my addresses and get back to you, but a few that come to mind are
Tom Gibson and Tom Givnish both of whom I believe are still at the
University of Wisconsin, Madison. Gibson is more of a community ecologist
looking at cp communities while Givnish has published on cp natural
history, ecology, and evolution among other topics. Tom Miller, at Florida
State in Tallahassee, and I are primarily interested in S. purpurea as a
tool for testing theories in community ecology on a small, replicable,
natural system. In the near future, I hope to begin some work on the
evolution of the symbiosis between the insects and other invertebrates
associated with the plants. Bill Platt at Louisianna State in Baton Rouge
has done some work on the role of fire in maintaining cp communities in the
southeastern US. Stephen Heard at the University of Iowa and Bill Bradshaw
from the University of Oregon have both studied the mosquitoes associated
that breed inthe pitchers. Shahid Naeem from the University of Minnesota
did some work a few years ago on insect communities in the pitchers of
Darlingtonia. James Cresswell was at the University of Michigan. His
latest stuff has been on prey capture rates in S. purpurea. Anthony
Nastase and Sandra Newell both at Indiana University of Pennsylvania have
looked at midges and mosquitoes as well as prey capture in S. purpurea.
George Folkerts at Auburn University in Alabama has done a good bit on
pitcher plant ecology and conservation.

There are probably a few others, but I can't recall them at the moment.
You should be able to find all the citations for these folks quite easily
through one of the online data bases for ecology or biology. Let me know
if you need more details. Their email addresses should be available on the
net by searching for the University name and then following the appropriate
links. Many are listed in the ESA directory also.

I gather from some of your previous messages that you are a plankton
ecologist. Are you by any chance planning to be at the ESA meeting in
Providence? We might be able to meet up. This invite goes out to any
other ecologists who might be going to the meeting. Might be fun to meet
and talk cps.

Cheers,
Liane
