Chiggers affect CPers a lot because they like the scrub/brush areas that
CPs like to grow in (at least here in the SE US). They attack primarily
through exposed skin -- wearing long pants will usually defeat them (as
will the traditional application of toxic chemicals to one's bare legs).
They show up at your waistband and anywhere else that's warm & moist
(similar to ticks' preferences). They're such tiny mites that they're
invisible to the naked eye, but their legacy is not! They leave red welts
that itch itch itch for days.

So if you go to a swamp and you see someone wandering around in the 95+
degree heat wearing long pants with the cuffs duct taped to their boots,
chances are they've had chiggers before and would rather asphyxiate and die
of heat prostration than go through a chigger infestation again.
