There are two kinds of mites that are affecting honeybee populations,
one is called the "tracheal mite" and as you might guess, it interferes
with respiration. The other is called the "Varroa mite", I don't know
the origin of the name but they are parisitic mites that attach
themselves in quantity to a honeybee, weakening it and eventually
killing it. Both of these mites spread very rapidly within the usually
crowded conditions within a hive.
