I concur with Christoph: On my first trip to the Pine Barrens, recently, I
noticed the same phenomenon. S. purpurea "pine barrens" (term I heard used by
Jim Bockowski to reflect the intergraded descendents of S. purpurea venosa
and S. purpurea purpurea) was often found growing in pure "floating" sphagnum
in riverside bogs. the plants, upon closer examination, had very long "stems"
before the pitchers would form, each one slightly higher than the other, to
keep above water, as it were). I believe the term S. purpurea stolinifera was
once (mistakenly) applied to this plant? I believe, as does Christoph, that
it's cultural.
Is the cultivated plant in question growing in similar conditions (pure
sphagnum)? If not, maybe something else is going on there.
FWIW,
