My thanks to everyone who replied, through the list and directly, about
my S. purppurea that was putting up a stem. The conclusion I have been helped
towards is that the plant was being shaded by other plants around it and was
growing up towards the light. This seems best to fit what I see in my
greenhouse. I must admit that it looks rather nice and has certainly grown
quickly! I will now find out what happens if I move it into a less shady
position. I wonder if it will shrink down on itself :-)
