Recently I went down to the local nursery (in San Francisco) to purchase
Benomyl--so I could stratify my Cephalotus seed. I was informed that the
sale of fungicides containing benomyl have been prohibited in California.
I asked why and was told that it was highly toxic (of course.) I noticed
they sold sulphur-based, environment-friendly fungicides and recalled the
one time I used Safer's to treat an infected rosebush. It was completely
ineffective. I thanked the sales clerk for the info, but thought I'd
check in with you guys to see if you've had any success with sulphur-based
fungicides for stratifying CP seeds, or if you can recommend an
as-non-toxic-as-possible fungicide. (I realize of course, that anything
with a -cide suffix means certain death to SOMEthing.) Or if anyone has
advice, or alternatives to stratification--is it even necessary for
Cephalotus?--I'd greatly appreciate it.
