There are several methods in which a camera light meter can be used
to calculate light intensity. This is the one I use. Set the film
ASA to 100. Aim the camera at a matte white cardboard placed in the
intended position of the plant. Get close enough until the
cardboard fills the frame. Set the aperture to F4. The shutter speed
that gives the correct exposure is the approximate f.c.
(footcandles) interpreted as a whole number. For example if the
shutter speed reads 1/500 there is 500 f.c. of light present. I
