Re Ron lanes question of the differences between Akai Ryu and Royal Red
I have been observing both plants over numerous seasons .
First it is important to grow both plants with maximium light intensity
as this factors controls anthocyanin production ( red pigmentation\color)
Akai Ryu has a deeper red coloration , Royal Red is slightly more burgendy
Fertilizer regimes will greatly effect this color , hence differences will
not be as apparent
when the media contains nitrogen .
The trap hairs on Akai Ryu are longer and even in length , Royal Red has the
third ( middle )
hair significantly reduced .
Royal Red is a significantly slower grower , invitro as well as ex vitro
Floral parts ( female ) of Akai Ryu are pink as distinct from white or pale
Akai Ryu under high light is more robust, with age ( later season growth )
Royal Red
leaves become more elongate .
Trap size appears to be similar .
DNA fingerprinting shows significant diffences in its genotype,
indicating their parentage is not closely related .
The phenotypic ( visual ) differences are accentuated by light and lack of
nutrition
Differing latitudes and media will express different coloration and growth
habits
My plants are grown in Melbourne Victoria Australia .
