Subject: RE: Strange pitchers on Sarracenia hybrid

Hi Cyril,

Two things could be happening. If the deformed pitcher is like a normal
pitcher, just bent or twisted then it resulted from an environmental
factor, for instance, the plant was low on water while the pitcher was
forming. Another possiblity is that it is a winter leaf (phyllodia).
A winter leaf has the following characteristics:

1. It doesn't open like a normal pitcher
2. They are produced in from late summer to fall,
3. They are not as tall as a normal pitcher.
4. They usually remain green throughout the winter.
5. The tip of the leaf can be straight or bent like a hook.

Hope this helps.
David

Dear CPers of the list,
I have a very small collection which includes a S. hybrid. I noticed an
odd looking pitcher
on it: it doesn't grow straight like all other pitchers, but seems to be
malformed, it makes
a roll avoer itself....
