Subject: Laws on spamming

On the issue of unsolicited commercial mail:

Because this list originates in the less-than-grand US of A, there
actually exists a law in the US codes which has been made applicable. It
was originally intended to deal with mass-market faxing during the
beginning of the fax machine's life, and makes a US$500 award per incident
providing charges are filed. Of course, like any legal mumbo-jumbo, it
costs about a thousand dollars in lawyering to get your $500, but what do
you expect, hmmm?
Many cases have been made based on the fact that the definition of
fascimile used in the law also includes most email services even though
the law was not intended to apply to email per se. Just my spam-hating
US$0.02.
