Subject: Intro and Nep-questions

Hi!

My name is Christer Berglund and I'm writing from a small town in Sweden.
I've been going through the CP list archives and some CP homepages on the
net. What can I say? A lot of super information (thanks everyone) and
wonderful photos.

I've only recently started with CPs like Dionaea muscipula and some
different Sarracenias (bought planted in bowl). The genera I really want to
keep is Nepenthes. I probably have to go with the lowlands, because it
seems easier to fullfill their needs. I have a minimum roomtemp of 20-21 d
C so it's difficult to get the nighttime temperature drop that the
highlanders want.

I plan to have the plants in a terrarium so I will have a more stable
environment and I will probably try the easier species. I rather have a
great looking beginners plant than a lousy looking rariety.

Here's some questions for the Nepenthes growers here:

1. I've read about many varietys of planting soils and some of the
ingredients are hard to find here. So I wonder if a mix of 1/3 spagnum
peat, 1/3 dried spagnum moss and 1/3 perlite can keep Nepenthes happy?
Anyone tried it? Is it a good idea to change it to 1/4 parts and include
fir bark? Anyone used cypress mulch (I got it in a tropical vivarium and it
seem to hold moist well)?

2. I've also read that some mills the spagnum moss. Any advantages
doing so or is it only done to make it easier to mix it into the soil?

3. For those of you who grows Neps in live moss. How hard do pack the moss
in the pot (I guess enough to keep the plant standing). How long before you
have to repot. Anyone tried another moss than spagnum?

Thanks in advance
