Hi Susan,
I got very poor germination of Sarracenia seed when I tried germinating them
on top of a layer of vermiculite beneath which was a the standard mix of 1
part sand to 1 part milled sphagnum peat.. At the same time, I got very
good germination from the same lot of seed sown on top of the standard mix
just mentioned.
Seems like I remember reading somewhere that vermiculite releases cations
(Mg++, Ca++ ?), which I assume is what prevented germination.
I got decent germination of Nepenthes seed, however, sown on top of pure
vermiculite.
