Subject: Re: Nepenthes in water trays

Concerning Nepenthes sitting in trays of shallow water.

While it is true that this could be death for most Nepenthes, N. mirabilis
does well in trays IF, it gets good light, pure water, and it planted in an
open media. The pots should be tall, a three gallon pot sitting in an inch or
two of water. The roots will then find their own moisture level. This thin
leaved species quickly overgrows its container and will fill a pot with roots.
During hot weather this cuts down on the plant wilting since a root-bound N.
mirabilis will quickly dry out. In cooler weather it is best treated like
other species.

I have also experimented with N. gracilis, the largest plants a friend saw in
the field were growing at the base of trees (fresh-water mangroves ?)
surrounded by water with little obvious dry ground. One gracilis that I have
had in a tray all summer has grown well and flowered, but again in cool
weather I plan to remove the tray.
