Hi David, re your south fla collected D capillaris; what you have is very
likely capillaris. The souther form(as differentiated for the species growing
in north fla and northward) is primarily a winter/cool grower, with the
northern form growing during the warmer months. Her in fla the local foem with
grow very long petioles and can have leaves that approach being almost round,
while other may look very much like D intermedia. I strongly suspect that a
hybrid swarm of D intermedia x capillaris exists throughout central fla and
this is very likely crossed back to capillaris. When Robert Gibson was over
here earlier this year , he looked at the plants but could not see any
discernable diffrence in the flowers or seed from the diffrent populations.
When you grow capillaris under lights especially if the output is not real
strong; the plants will grow greener and more elongated.. Hope this helps.
BTW, Vincent in west cent fla, I grow in a green house with a wet pad and
exhaust fans, which allows me to grow mid level neps(also Masdevallias and
fuchsia). Let me know privately if I can be of further help.
