I've just finished Geoffrey Wong's account of the state of San
Franscico's water supply in regards to Lead (Topic No. 6 Digest
1788). As most of you already know - bogs are renown accumulators
of very heavy metals such as Cadmium, Mercury and Lead not to
mention so called "Bog" Iron and Copper. I have found that Cadmium
is very toxic to CPs in soluble form - about four times more toxic
than Lead. Most publications imply that it is their effect on
Sulfhydryl groups especially of proteins that is their greatest
cause of toxicity. Interestingly I have found that Cadmium is toxic
to CPs at its natural "Background" level in the environment which
implies from the premise at the start that it is held in an
unobtainable form probably chelated to the organic fraction of the
soil.
