Hi, David,
No, the styrofoam container is not sunk in the ground; it is just
sitting on the porch, which is a north exposure. It gets only a small
amount of early morning sun, and a little very late afternoon sun.
The container is a box that predatory bugs were shipped in... I guess
a shipping company might sell such boxes to ship anything that needs
to stay cool. The sizes of the boxes vary, but mine is about 12" by
14" by about 8 to 10" deep.
