Perhaps if they were closer to the ground where they can benefit from
crawlers as well as flyers. My plants trap lots of earwigs, crane flies
and hopping spiders. I've actually seen these critters working their
mouthparts over the teeth and edges where the nectar is located, even
after the trap has shut on them. Also, yellow jackets seem to like them
during the early morning and late afternoon hours. The rest of the day,
YJs seem to forage for spiders to feed to their broods. My thinking is
that they fuel up and refuel during the beginning and end of the day.
So if at noon you see YJs more interested in your fence than your
plants, it's because they're not feeding themselves, but hunting for
their young. I can spend entire weekends watching the insect activity
in my windowbox garden.
