I have built a very simple support structure in the form of a box with a few
garden stakes, over which I drape bird netting. This keeps out Squirrels
and birds. Its not that unsigltly either, as you can clearly see the
plants.

For hot days & bright days (around June 21) I have a roll of screen door
nylon mesh that I roll down to further shade the plants.
