Subject: Live versus dead sphagnum

I seem to consistently have trouble when using live milled Sphagnum to sow
seeds: the stuff starts to grow straight away and swamps the seedlings.

I have now tried microwaving the soppy, milled sphagnum for a few minutes
(thus steaming it), in order to kill it.

Any thoughts on this? Will killing the moss affect some of its
fungus-deterring or water retention capabilities?
