That seems very cheap compared to the prices down here (perhaps *too*
cheap and given the plastic-bag potting situation, I hope that they were
greenhouse grown).

I've never had much trouble growing them without any special care. Mine
have increased in size from about 4 to 10-12 inches over a "few" years,
simply by growing them in a large white polystyrene box (actually an old
tomato box obtained free from a greengrocer) full of long-fibre sphagnum
moss ("dead"). I water these (and my other plants) about once a week,
or more often in summer using about 5 litres to soak the sphag (there is
no tray to store water - just the plain box with it's original drainage
holes). Basically, that's all there is to it. The white polystryene
foam keeps the plants cool and the large volume of spag keeps a good
supply of water. The only "problems" encountered are scale insects
(which don't cause too much harm, just scrape them off the leaves with a
fingernail) and the plants' preference to producing stolons ( and new
plantlets) instead of flowers!
