Jan, I have to admit, I'm not sure either. I can speak for myself and
say that I get my greatest thrills from growing non-hybrids, and much
of cultivar activity is in hybridization. Certainly I hybridize Sarrs,
but I've only been doing it for about 5 years and my first crosses are
just finally reaching flowering size---maybe I'll register some if I
think they're good enough.
But I am not going to register all my plants as cultivars. Perhaps
this will placate you...when you see me list a plant as
_S.rubra ssp. jonesii_---anthocyanin free,
think what I do, that is the *name* of this plant is _S.rubra ssp. jonesii_
and the anthocyanin-free is just an additional descriptor, as if you
were visiting my greenhouse and I said, "Oh, and this clone of
_S.rubra jonesii_ is notable because it is free of anthocyanin. Neat,
huh?"
