Doug, if you have a scope, check your water. You may already HAVE Daphnia.
Live sphagnum is usually filled with Daphnia or equivalent microfauna. If
you're growing plants standing in trays of water, check out the algae-muck
floating in the tray. I did this and found a zoo.
If you have algae on the glass of your tank, you might buy one of those
"algae-eater" fish with the suction-cup mouthparts. They may not be built
to eat floating plants.
