S.purpurea purpurea is generally smaller than venosa with the
opening being proportionally smaller than that of venosa. As well,
venosa is pubescent while purpurea is glabrous (sp?). Run your finger
along the pitcher and you should be able to tell the difference.

I think there's some trick about pinching the hood together and
if it's still the size of the opening, it's venosa. If it's smaller than
the opening, it's purpurea. I'm not sure how reliable this technique is
though.
