I am still not convince that VFT need to be treated in this way. I have
been growing quite a bit of VFT for over 3 years now and they never get
this "stratification"-type treatment. Granted, they are outside and it
does get down into the 30s during the Fall & Winter here, but they grow
all year long and have been bigger every year.

Very bad idea ... although I have never done it and avoid clay pots
completely, I have seen the tell-tale white residue on the pots, even
from so-called "pure" water. At least in this case, the synthetic
material (plastic) is better than the natural stuff (clay)!
