The peat will eventually grow a top layer of moss, in most cases, in a
few months IF it isn't disturbed during that period of time, you use pure
water and it doesn't sunburned. Unfortunately, it will take some time (1
year or so) for the "moss" to look like something recognizeable ...
however, after 3 years of letting the top layer grow naturally on a few
pots, it has never gotten to the point of looking like Sphagnum moss ...
