Hi all,
Regarding Rockwool: This is another of those super-heated and then spun
into a useable form of mineral (like Vermiculite and Perlite). It was
originally (and still is) used as loft insulating material. However,
enterprising growers realised that it could be used as a medium in which
cuttings could be rooted, seed could be germinated, etc.
Rockwool manufacturers quickly cottoned on to this idea and raised the
price considerably. They also began to produce modular blocks (and trays to
contain the cubes), specifically designed with commercial horticulture in
mind.
I don't know about anywhere else, but here in the UK, Rockwool can be
purchased from the suppliers (very expensive for small quantities!). It is
also available through nursery supply firms and nurseries themselves, so
have a chat with your local nursery to see if they can offer you any. Also,
as with many other professional materials, garden centres often sell
materials such as Rockwool in the "sundries" section. If all else fails,
check out a builder's merchants.
I hope that this has been of some use to you,
Rob.
