Howdy folks, Peter here at California Carnivores.
I just wanted to mention that yesterday at the nursery we had a flowering
Drosera pauciflora on display. Thankfully only two customers fainted. The
plant was lent to us by Mike Wang, a high schooler who bought the plant from
us a couple of years ago. My own plants have never flowered since that mass
flowering back around 1988 that I wrote about in CPN, with a photo. I have
never figured out why our plants never repeated that glorious show, and now
suspect that one reason might be it needs a winter chill into the upper 30s or
40s to enduce flowering, similarly to D. hamiltonii.
Mike grew his D. pauciflora outdoors in the San Francisco area. For me,
seeing the sight brought back memories of my hysteria 10 years ago, and I'm
happy to report that my memory was not exaggerated. The plant's flowers open
for a few hours only ,for one day, and close when the sun goes away. It could
be that "pauciflora" means a paucity or shortage of flowers, and perhaps it is
a naturally rare even. I've never heard of any others that have flowered in
cultivation, although I am sure this has occured, and would like to hear of
other's experiences.
In other news, all of you kind folks who have been patiently awaiting
The Savage Garden will soon be rewarded. The books arrived at Ten Speed
Press yesterday so therefore we and everyone else who've ordered it should
soon get the copies. We'll be shipping them as soon as they arrive. Boxes
and labels are all set.
        Th-th-th-th-that's all folks! Peter
